In October, the NPI of the Czech Academy of Sciences welcomed a distinguished members of the Human Evolution and Archaeological Sciences (HEAS) at the University of Vienna. The visitors were led by Professor Tom Higham, a world-renowned expert on human evolution, paleogenetics and radiocarbon dating.
The excursion focused on a detailed introduction to the operation of the AMS Laboratory. It included sample preparation labs and MILEA system, which enables ultra-sensitive measurements of isotopes useful not only for human evolution studies – carbon-14, beryllium-10, and aluminum-26. The guests appreciated the technical equipment of the laboratory, as well as the scientific expertise and organization of its operations, particularly the preparation of specific fractions of archaeological samples. After the visit, the team was excited and hoped for intensification of the future collaborations.
HEAS is a network of research teams of the University of Vienna and supported by Natural History Museum, Vienna. It is focused on excellent research of human evolution and archaeological sciences and hosts several holders of prestigious European ERC grants.
