The Week of the Czech Academy of Sciences at the Nuclear Physics Institute
12. 11. 2024

A total of three NPI workplaces participated in the Week of the Czech Academy of Sciences, which ran from November 4 to 10, 2024. For three days, a functional civil protection shelter was accessible in the underground premises Department of the Radiation Dosimetry of the NPI on the grounds of Bulovka Hospital in Prague; on Friday and Saturday, visitors could see two important nuclear facilities in the area in Řež.
During a tour of the civil protection shelter in Prague, interested parties were guided by NPI scientists in well-preserved uniforms to convey as faithfully as possible the time in which the shelter was created.
In Řež, visitors had the unique opportunity to see two important nuclear facilities of the NPI: the Tandetron accelerator and the MILEA accelerator mass spectrometer. The Tandetron is used, for example, in the research of new materials, while the MILEA spectrometer is used, for example, for precise radiocarbon dating of archaeological finds.
At the Tandetron, those interested could also have fun with practical demonstrations focused on the properties of the vacuum, which is necessary for the functioning of ion accelerators.
Open days in Řež were organized in cooperation with ÚJV Řež, a. s., the Research Center Řež and the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Here, too, the program on Friday was dedicated to schools, while Saturday belonged to the general public.
