International collaboration between NPI and a Japanese University brings new insights in the field of energy storage materials
18. 10. 2025

Czech scientists from the Nuclear Physics Institute (NPI) of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) and their colleagues from Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT) in Japan have significantly deepened their joint research in the field of materials for energy storage over the past year. Reciprocal visits in the Czech Republic and Japan enabled intensive collaboration aimed at developing more efficient lithium-ion batteries.
In August, the Department of Neutron and Ion Methods (DNIM) of NPI welcomed a team of Japanese researchers. Together with Czech colleagues, they focused on preparing nanostructured thin films, which may find applications in modern energy storage technologies. A month later, the DNIM team visited the partner university in Japan, where Czech scientists continued experiments modifying these thin films and graphene using a pulsed ion beam. The goal of the research is to develop suitable materials with increasing ability in storing lithium for energy storage devices, in particular lithium-ion batteries.
This collaboration, supported by a bilateral grant between the CAS and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), confirms the high level of expertise of our institute in the field of materials research.
