Iva Synková from DNIM received the Martina Roeselová Memorial Fellowship
12. 12. 2024

Iva Synková, a junior scientist at the Department of Neutron and Ion Methods of the NPI and mother of five children, has received the prestigious Martina Roeselová Memorial Fellowship. This support is awarded by the IOCB Tech Foundation.
The scholarship in the amount of 150,000 CZK is intended for female and male postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows actively working in the field of natural sciences at universities and non-university research institutes in the Czech Republic, who are also caring for a preschool child. The financial support is intended to cover childcare services so that scientists at the beginning of their parenthood can continue their studies or research and not lose contact with world science.
As part of her PhD studies at the Faculty of Science of the Charles University, Iva Synková is conducting research at the NPI using instrumental neutron activation analysis to study fungal ecology and geomycology. Her work focuses on the halogen content in the fruiting bodies of large fungi, especially on the accumulation, phylogenetic and distributional dependencies of chlorine and bromine and their interactions with soil. In addition to her research activities, she and her husband face the daily challenge of raising their five children, aged three to eight.
The grant commemorates the memory of an internationally renowned scientist at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the CAS, where it was also established. It has been awarded since 2016 and has so far been received by 45 young scientists from a number of Czech universities and research institutions.
