Department of Radiation Dosimetry NPI initiated the EURADOS and MEENAS webinar with Olena Pareniuk from the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the current situation in Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhya NPPs and Charkiv neutron source facility.
In the webinar will be given a short outline of the events in the nuclear industry in Ukraine, with the respect of the ongoing russian aggression. The webinar will be held in English, participation is free of charge, after registration here, where you can also find more detailed information about the lecturer.
Ukraine is the European country with a strong nuclear industry. It has 15 units on 4 commercial nuclear power plants, uranium mining and processing industry, nuclear research facilities and, of course, Chornobyl NPP, surrounded by the exclusion zone. On February, 24th Russia started a full-scale invasion on the territory of Ukraine, using the exclusion zone as one of the penetration points, completely ignoring all radiation safety measures. On March, 4th Russian troops used tanks to shoot the 1st unit of Zaporizhzhya NPP, operating commercial NPP, the biggest in Europe.
Olena Pareniuk was originally supposed to present the issue only at NPI, but due to the extraordinary urgency of the topic, this presentation will take place within the EURADOS webinars, and thus at an international forum.
