LINAC burst selector successfully tested by proton beam
29. 11. 2019
In early July 2019, the nuclear safety authority has given SPIRAL-2 permission to operate. The commissioning of the Linear accelerator (LINAC) was finally be able to start. There was still a long way to get beam at NFS, but this permission was an important step.
At night on November 27, the LINAC reached its nominal voltage and accelerated the proton beam to the design value of 33 MeV. The single burst selector was successfully tested as can be seen on the attached picture: the red curve is the beam with the burst selector on.
The first proton beam at low intensity will be sent to the NFS Faraday Cup in a week. Then if everything goes well the irradiation station and the pneumatic transfer system, developed with participation of NPI scientists, will be used for a first test.
