The Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences is looking for a postdoctoral researcher (m/f) to join our Ultrarelativistic Heavy-Ion Physics group. Our group has been studying the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a hot and dense state of nuclear matter produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the RHIC accelerator at BNL and the LHC at CERN, for many years. The successful candidate will join research carried out within our participation in the ALICE experiment at the LHC. In addition to data analysis, our group is involved in the upgrade of the ALICE ITS3 inner tracking detector for LHC Run 4 and in the preparation of the future ALICE3 experiment, which will replace the current ALICE experiment after 2030.
Your scope of work?
- Analysis of experimental data from the ALICE experiment, with a focus on hard probes (jets, heavy quarks, or quarkonia),
- work on the upgrade of the ITS3 inner tracking detector and on the preparation of the future ALICE3 experiment (radiation-tolerance testing, simulations, and software development),
- preparation of scientific publications and presentations at international conferences,
- preparation of grant proposals.
Required qualifications and skills:
- completed PhD in particle or nuclear physics (obtained within the last five years)
- knowledge of C++, ALICE O2, Python, and ROOT; knowledge of machine-learning methods is an advantage
- Advantage: experience with silicon detectors
- proficient English & ability to work in an international team,
- clear PC (police clearance), independent worker.

We are the CRL radiocarbon laboratory at the Nuclear Physics Institute, equipped with an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) system, and we are the only laboratory of its kind in the Czech Republic. Our equipment also includes other analytical and laboratory instruments. In this area, we can compare ourselves with the world's leading radiocarbon laboratories. Who we are looking for:
Scientist – postdoctoral researcher with experience in using AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) systems. Experience in related fields (physical chemistry, chemistry, analytical chemistry) is an advantage.
Required qualifications:
- PhD or equivalent in a relevant field
- at least two years of experience in the required field
- professional experience in the use of AMS systems
- ability to communicate actively in English (both in spoken and written form)
- scientific writing skills
- ability to work independently and collaborate within national and international teams
- experience in submitting applications for domestic and international projects is an advantage
Key responsibilities:
- perform research based on analytical methods and related instrumentation
- develop new methods and analytical procedures related primarily to radiocarbon dating
- analyse and interpret experimental data
- responsibility for the operation and reliability of instruments and measured data.
- publish results in high-impact scientific journals and present research findings at domestic and international conferences
- collaborate with partner institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad

Experience with HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography) and FTIR (Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy) instruments is an advantage. Experience with radiocarbon dating is an advantage.
Required qualifications:
- PhD or equivalent in a relevant field
- at least two years of experience in the required field
