
An international meeting in Prague highlighted professor Pavel Exner’s contribution to mathematical physics

From 24 to 29 May 2026, the international conference Operator Theory and Mathematical Physics took place at the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of CTU in Prague. The event was jointly organized by the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of CTU, the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Doppler Institute for Mathematical Physics and Applied Mathematics, and the Czech Physical Society.
The conference was held on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Professor Pavel Exner, a long-standing member of the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Nuclear Physics Institute.
More than 60 experts from many countries took part in the conference. Among the guests were leading figures in the field, including Jussi Behrndt from TU Graz, Pedro Freitas from the Universidade de Lisboa, Evans Harrell from Georgia Tech, Fritz Gesztesy from Baylor University, Ari Laptev from Imperial College, Olaf Post from Universität Trier, and Leszek Sirko from the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. A significant share of the participants also consisted of young researchers, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows whom Professor Exner has supervised or professionally influenced during his career.
The main focus of the conference was on mathematical models of quantum systems, which contribute both to a deeper understanding of fundamental questions in quantum physics and to future applications, for example in the research of new materials. The programme presented current results in operator theory and mathematical physics, including topics related to quantum graphs, spectral theory, and the properties of differential operators.
The meeting not only highlighted Professor Pavel Exner’s outstanding scientific contribution, but also confirmed that Prague remains an important centre of international cooperation in mathematical physics.
