Researcher position in the Nuclear Physics Institute of the CAS

Nuclear Physics Institute of the CAS opens a position in the field of radiation biophysics and microdosimetry.

Group: Department of Radiation Dosimetry

Job Description:
The position is in the field of radiation biophysics and microdosimetry. The candidate will perform theoretical modeling of radiation damage to cell compartments, cells and tissues including relevant physical, chemical and biochemical processes of radiation action. The candidate will use and further develop existing simulation tools such as RADAMOL and PARTRACK codes. Calculated results will complement and simulate experimental studies performed in the department or published in order to describe and understand detrimental biological effects of ionizing radiation. The calculations shall be used to solve actual research topics such as biological effects of low doses of ionizing radiation, radiation effectiveness of therapeutic ion beams or effects of mixed radiation fields. The candidate is expected to supervise bachelor, master and PhD students, prepare and submit his own research projects and participate on existing research in the department.

Requirements:

  • Applicant is expected to have (or will have in a short time), a doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant scientific field such as physics, applied mathematics, or related fields
  • Experiences/interest in radiation biophysics, radiobiology and radiation protection

Researcher

Job Description
The ideal candidate will have expertise in Cosmic/Atmospheric Radiation Detection/Dosimetry in high-energy mixed radiation fields. In particular the successful candidate will be responsible for development of radiation dosimeters for detection of high-energy atmospheric radiation phenomena occurring in thunderstorms. The work consists in design of novel sensors (radiation, elmg. field) and their synchronization, performing experiments including terrain measurements during thunderstorms, measured data analysis (Python, Matlab, Octave, …), preparation of scientific papers, international conference contributions, and grant applications, close collaboration with institutes from France, Germany, Slovakia, Armenia, Russia, USA, and Japan, and leading master and PhD students.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematical Physics

The Mathematical Physics Group in the Department of Theoretical Physics of the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Řež invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in Mathematical Physics within the scope of the project

Mathematical aspects of new challenges in physics,


with a special emphasis put on phenomena encountered in the newly developing fields of quantum mechanics with non-Hermitian operators, metamaterials and spectral-geometric properties of nanostructures. The position is for one year, starting before the end of 2018, with the extension option for a second year upon mutual agreement. The gross salary is approximately 30 000 CZK per month plus for foreign citizens some extras for housing. There are no teaching duties associated with the position.
Applicants should have a PhD in Mathematics or Theoretical Physics (or equivalent) obtained preferably after January 1, 2014. They must show very strong research promise in at least one of the following research domains:

  • geometric analysis;
  • spectral theory;
  • partial diferential equations;
  • semiclassical analysis.


Previous experience in the area of the project is an advantage but not necessary.

Research scientist - Structure analysis using neutron powder diffraction

Neutron powder diffraction is a very efficient tool for studies of crystal structures including magnetic ordering in condensed matter. It is therefore widely used in many research fields, such as crystallography, mineralogy, geochemistry, solid-state physics, chemistry or material science & engineering. The Department of Neutron Physics at NPI operates the neutron powder diffractometer MEREDIT (http://neutron.ujf.cas.cz/meredit). In the frame of CANAM infrastructure, it serves both internal and external users to study crystal structures in-situ under various sample conditions (high and low temperatures, mechanical loading).
A post-doctoral position is open for an instrument scientist who will take part in the operation and further development of the diffractometer MEREDIT and related experimental methods, including in-situ techniques and data analysis methods. The successful candidate will be co-responsible for the support of external users, which usually includes participation in the experiment with neutrons as well as collaboration on data analysis and publication of results. The candidate is also expected to develop his/her own research program in the area related to the scientific scope of the diffractometer MEREDIT.

Specific requirements for this position:

  • Applicants are expected to have, or be working towards, a doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant scientific field such as material physics, chemistry, crystallography, materials engineering or a related field
  • Ability of autonomous scientific work, flexibility and teamwork
  • Fluent communication in English

Postdoctoral position - experimental nuclear physics

Job Description

The position is in experimental fields of low energy nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics.
The position involves

  • experimental work on in-beam measurements
  • data analysis and interpretation of the data

The main task is the analysis and conducting the experiment(s) with ANC method to contribute to the knowledge of the direct (p,gamma) process in s,d-nuclei.
The local experimental equipment is based on accelerators in Rez (mainly U120M cyclotron), Prague (Van de Graaff 2MV) and collaborations with GANIL/SPIRAL2 and INFN-LNS.

Applicants should have experience in nuclear physics and nuclear reactions, nuclear electronics, detectors and DAQ.  Programming languages (C++, python) knowledge and experience with ROOT libraries is very welcome. Experience with nuclear reaction codes is valuable for the data analysis/interpretation.

INSTRUMENT SCIENTIST (Postdoc)
at a neutron diffractometer for characterization of microstrains and deformation mechanism

The Neutron Physics Laboratory (NPL) at the Nuclear Physics Institute, Řež near Prague, Czech Republic, invites applications for an instrument scientist position in neutron diffraction. The position is open to candidates who have (or are about to receive) a PhD in physics, chemistry, material science and engineering or related areas, and have a proven record of experience with experimental research in materials science. The candidate should preferably have a background in neutron or X-ray diffraction methods and good technical and communication skills.

The successful candidate will participate in the research and development work associated with neutron scattering instrumentation at the neutron diffractometers dedicated to characterization of microstrains and deformation mechanism in technologically important materials. Responsibilities will include the cooperation with visiting researchers in conducting experiments and data reduction in the subjects like microstrain characterization of materials within the open access user program of CANAM. She/he will also participate in the instrumental equipment and software upgrade projects at the diffractometer. The instrument scientist is also expected to develop her/his own research program using the diffractometer and/or other facilities at NPL, preferably in the field of characterization of microstrains and deformation mechanism in alloys and related topics.

The Nuclear Physics Institute ASCR, public research institution, is a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. With about 250 employees, it hosts the user infrastructure CANAM, which includes also Neutron Physics Laboratory (NPL). New open post doc position will be devoted to the study of ion beam interactions with solid state, ion energy stopping studies in various materials, ion beam interaction simulations using SRIM, TRIDYN and FLUX simulation codes with special focus on ion beam channeling studies including ion channeling energy stopping studies and simulations. The researcher will be further responsible for ion beam analytical methods application as RBS, ERDA, RBS channeling and ERDA TOF on various aterials for compositional and structure studies with special attention to RBS channeling in ion beam implanted and irradiated crystalline materials with extraordinary optical and electrical properties, color centres synthesis in crystalline materials, synthetization of new materials using heavy energetic ions and others.
