The conference is organised by European Neutron Scattering Association, Charles University in Prague - Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and Nuclear Physics Institute ASCR. Physical simulations of processes in engineering materials with in-situ neutron diffraction/imaging.

November 15-16, 2012, Prague, Czech Republic

The symposium will bring together the community of engineers and material scientists involved in engineering material research using Gleeble simulators with the members of neutron and/or X-ray diffraction community involved engineering studies (instrument scientists, users and developers) with the aim to explore the idea to carry out Physical Simulations with neutron diffraction at ESS Spallation Source to be built till 2020 in Lund Sweden.

Satellite meeting of the 5th European Conference on Neutron Scattering (ECNS 2011), follows the "ESS Science and Scientists" meeting.

Scope

Monte Carlo simulation of neutron scattering instruments has become a well established technique, which helps significantly in the process of designing instruments, verifying new experimental methods, data analysis and training. Development of the related simulation software has been stimulated by ambitious instrument modernisation projects undertaken by large neutron facilities in the last two decades. It is likely to accelerate in the next future both due to the significant progress in neutron-optical technologies and newly launched instrumentation projects. Close interaction between instrument scientists and software developers (who do not always meet in one person) is essential mainly in the design phase, which permits newly built experimental facilities to fully exploit the possibilities of state-of-the-art neutron optics and neutron sources.

This workshop is organized by the Nuclear Physics Institute (NPI) in Řež in collaboration with McStas, VITESS and RESTRAX developers with the aim to provide a platform for such sharing of ideas between simulation software developers and instrument scientists. Its program is intended as complementary to the ECNS 2011 by giving larger opportunity to present and discuss works under development as well as new untested ideas in neutron instrumentation rather than finished works ready for publication. Contributions from colleagues looking for support in validation of novel neutron-optical devices and new concepts in instrumentation by Monte Carlo simulations are particularly welcome.

Abstracts

Both oral and poster presentations are expected. If you plan to have a contribution, please send us tentative title via the registration or registration update form. The deadline for abstract submissison is on 24 June 2011. The abstracts (approx. 1/2 page A4) should be sent by e-mail to  MCNSI7 , indicating whether you suggest an oral or poster contribution.

We aim to have proceedings in Journal of Neutron Research, the deadline for paper submission is expected in August. More information will be available here later.

Oral and poster contributions

There is a limited time space for oral contributions, but poster boards for standard A0 format posters will also be available. Please note that you have to send an abstract (see above) if you intend to present a contribution. Decision on the oral vs. poster presentations will be made by the end of June. No special poster session is planned, but we try to allow for enough time for discussions at the posters during coffee breaks.

• Novel neutron-optical devices and instrument concepts
• Focusing neutron optics for extreme sample environment
• Precise Bragg optics using perfect bent crystals
• Acceptance-diagram (AD) calculations for complex neutron optics (complicated guide shapes, crystal monochromators etc.)
• Instrument optimisation methods and their incorporation into MC simulation and AD software
• Simulation of instrument models for continuous and pulsed sources, including ESS.

Tentative program

The Monte Carlo meeting will follow the "ESS Science and Scientists" hold in the Prague centre. As many participants are expected to attend both events, the start of the MCNSI7 workshop might be postponed by approx. 30 min. to allow for transport between the two places.

Program

The workshop program begins on Saturday at 14:15, so that participants of the preceding ESS&S meeting have sufficient time to join us at the workshop venue, and continues on Sunday morning. It starts with overviews of recent MC simulation software developments, followed by talks on instrumentation and simulation techniques. Average time provided for each talk is 20-25 min. including discussion. In addition, long coffee breaks are planned each day with the intention to provide sufficient time for poster presentations and further discussions.

Travel information

The workshop takes place at the Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Ke Karlovu 5, in the lecture room F2 (1st floor).

From the Clarion Congress Center (ECNS venue)

Use metro line B from "Vysocanska" (station at the hotel) to Florenc. Change for metro line C and exit at the station "I.P. Pavlova". Cross to the opposite side of the I.P. Pavlova square and follow the streets "Na Bojisti" and "Ke Karlovu" (see the attached map).

From Karolinum (ESS&S venue)

Walk to the metro line A Mustek through the streets "Zelezna", "Rytirska", "Na mustku" (see the map), take one stop to "Muzeum" and change for metro line C, one stop to the station "I.P. Pavlova" and further follow the walk route described above. There should be a person to guide you from Karolinum to the workshop place on Saturday (expected departure at 13:40).

In both cases, you need a single short-term ticket (24 CZK), which permits for all kinds of transfer within the 30 min. of ticket validity. For more information, you may visit the DPP web pages.

For authors

A computer (Windows) and data projector will be available for oral contributions. The time is limited to 20-25 min. per contribution, including discussion. If possible, please prepare your talks in PowerPoint (ppt), OpenOffice (odp) or PDF formats  and provide a copy well before your talk so that we can avoid time losses due to laptops reconnection etc.   

Poster boards will be available for the standard A0 portrait format. They can be hanged on throughout the duration of the workshop till Sunday noon. There are currently 4 poster presentation registered, but you are encouraged to bring also your posters from ECNS to enlarge the basis for discussions. Please let us know if you intend to do so, so that we can ensure sufficent space for your posters.

Proceedings

Proceedings from the workshop will be published in the Journal of Neutron Research. The deadline for manuscript submission is on the 1st of September. The paper length limit is 8 printed pages. You may refer to the journal documents for authors concerning manuscript style. Details of submission procedure will be available at this site later.
